Sorry, wrong forum, can this be moved to Std. cartridges?
Looking at loading my first batch of 150 gr berger vld for hunting.
Initially I need to break in the 111 fcns rifle (from Savage Shop w/ 26" med sporter w 9.5 twist and no brake) and the first 20 will be factory loads.
Being it's a long action and equipped with removable magazine I'm curious as to what overall length I should intially load the round.
Typically I make contact with the lands and back it off 5 thou. or so. I'm not sure the magazine will allow this.
I plan to use rutumbo and will start at about 70 gr and work up until I begin noticing pressure. I'm lead to believe the "majic number" is about 72.5 gr.
Anyone using this setup? Any comments or suggestions will be appreciated.

you sure you have 150's for the .284 cal? I have loaded and shot 140 and 168 vlds in my 7mm WSM. the 168s are great while the 140's shot ok. need to revisit them for sure. im thinking that you ment 140s in your post. good luck

Sorry for the delay and faulty post. My first attempt and been out of town.
K, I am loading 168 gr. The 150's are for my 30-06 (hornaday).
I will be working on it soon, just trying to get a good starting point.
This is a new rifle/barrel that I ordered from the custom shop (111 fcns with 26" med sporter fluted 9.5 twist target crown and no brake). I intend to break in the barrel with factory loads then dial in with the hand loads. Am I right in assuming there will be no problem using the factory loads for break-in and then moving to hand loads with bullets right at the lands?
I'd like to get to the range wednesday, yet have not loaded up the bergers yet.

thank you Tyler,
I will try various depths and report back. I have a lot of shooting (and cleaning) and loading to do in the next couple weeks.
This is the first time I have set up a rifle for distance shooting and want to not waste too much time getting started.
