I just pulled my first barrel and I had a problem. The barrel nut lossened OK but but hung up on something so I muscled it off thinking it was just some grime in there and I ruined the threads on the barrel and barrel nut. What did I do wrong or was it just just a bad set of threads. I just ordered a new nut for the new barrel but I don't want the same thing to happen again. Is the nut supposed to thread off the back or can it thread off the front of the barrel as well.

the barrel nut should come off the breech end

Which direction did you remove the one in question?

The nut is supposed to thread off the barrel on the chamber end of the barrel. If you threaded yours off towards the muzzle, that`s where you went wrong.

For the new install, put a dab of anti seize on the barrel threads, thread the nut on (from the chamber end to the muzzle end), then thread the barrel on the action to set the head space. Once the hs is set, tighten the nut. Some guys just do this hand tight with the nut wrench and some give the wrench a light tap with a dead blow hammer.
