If you are using a bench vise you don't hold the action in the vise, you hold the barrel in it and twist the action onto the secured barrel. At least that's how I do it...

One option is to cut V-notches:

The other is to drill a hole:

I think I drilled a half-inch hole in mine with a hole saw, though it might have been 3/4...don't remember.

How did it go? Did you have any trouble getting the old barrel off?

yes but no

i tried blocks of wood and a bench vise with no luck so i bit the bullet and got a wheeler #2 action wrench and a good spray of PB blaster on the old nut along with the nut wrench it came right off.

Actually.....I think that "little woman" with the shining star dress is the one at the Savage Factory that does all of the barrel tightening on ALL of the Savage and Stevens rifles. So....I don't know why these guys complain when they say they have such a hard time breaking 'em loose from the action!!!! ;D :D ;)

Nice Rig. I myself am somewhat in the same boat. I have the same donor rifle except mine is a 22-250 on the same long action. My question is, can I convert it to a 25-06? It is a long action but due to the small caliber it was chambered in originally, I am not sure if I can use the same bolt and magazine or if I have to replace them. I am gearing up to do 2 of these, the 22-250 to 25-06 and a sporter 243 (model 10) to a bull bbl .243.
