OK here is my next question

what is the better caliber the 260 rem or the 264wm? primary use will be white tail ,hog ,maybe a trip out west, but I already have in the safe a 270win,308win, 300wm, 35rem, and a 7.62x54r and 2 .50cal muzzleloaders.

i know long vs short/ reg vs mag.

reason I'm asking is that the ER Shaw barrel I'm looking at on midway is 199.99 +tax+ SH. that is in stock and could have it maybe in about a week.

but for about the same price give or take 10 bucks i can call er Shaw and get a 264 custom cut with the twist i want and length in about 3-4 months

ammo wont be a problem for either i handload.

260 ain't gonna touch the 264WM's ballistics...a 140gr bullet at 3100fps+ has serious long range oomph.

Can't help but think moving the same bullet 300fps+ faster than a 260, with 20+ grains more powder behind it, is going to result in one heck of a barrel burner. Probably not a problem if the primary use is hunting...

For the purposes of hunting whitetail and smaller game, a 260 carries plenty of energy to ranges beyond what the average hunter should probably be taking shots on deer-sized game.

Just had an opportunity to fully examine one of the long/short action, fixed one for friend of a good friend. Missing trigger spring not to tough to get goin. Gun was 223 in mint shape offerd him the 100.00 for it he just paid at a yard sale broken. Go figure.

here's what the one the gunsmith said.

try to order it why dont you. the part number is for the old style bolt. you need to be sure of what you have and what you are ordering. reguardless the bolt head in the catalog is ffl per factory

Hello after we talked on the phone today I got looking around for other
stuff and I found a bolt head @ brownells.com the part # is 855-000-283
so I'm not understanding how its restricted like you said? Im not
doubting you at all you're the professional im just letting you know
what I found.

I when I was on there I built a complete bolt minus the fireing pin and
the cocking button. For a $146.00

you may need a chamber reamer depending if the barrel is finish
chambered or short chambered. problem is the bolt head is restricted for
sale.

Hello
My name is Matt

And i have a savage 110 Long
action chambered in 223 REM

i would like to re-barrel in a
different caliber 260 REM to be specific.

i have a small parts
list of what i think i need and would lie to know if its all i
need.

new ER Shaw barrel 24" 1 n 9 twist
new 308 family bolt
head
new 308 family blind magazine well and spring and follower
go/no go
gauges.
barrel nut wrench

do i need a new front bolt bushing?
if so how do i know what one is right.
also i believe that my rifle is
a per 1999 so will the firing pin still work for the new
caliber.

thank you for your time in this matter

Its true that Savage will not sell certain items to individuals, just FFLs.

Its also true that there are many other sources to get such "restricted" parts...like Midway, as one example.

ya i know that savage wont sell it to me. that's why i'm not going through savage. and i am going to Brownell's or midway to get the part.

i was just showing what kind of response's im getting from the local's.

so far i have gotten more help and info here from you guys.

thanks

Sounds like your smith just doesn't want to work on a Savage. If he'll send them a copy of his FFL they will sell you
almost any part you want. My smith orders me parts quite often.

i will if i have to. but i called brownells and they said that they could sell me the bolt head without a FFL.

another question do i need a different recoil lug. or the factory one work?

Midwayusa is just about the best place for all savage parts & pieces.

recheck that 308 bolt head # i ordered that one 2 weeks ago for a biuld i did for a friend and it came in as a 300 win mg head called them up and ordered the other one for 308 ends with -007 if i can remember. and it is a small hole head (i have a large style pin and i'm waitng for midways backorder to put mine back together(gave him my firing pin so he could have it when he moved to NM)).

The factory recoil lug will work but they arnt the best. Get a good aftermarket on from SSS, Or Jim Briggs at Northland Shooters Supply.

You have to call Jim...he's VERY slow about email because he's so busy but *will* return phone calls if you don't get him first try.
