Thinking of purchasing my first spotting scope for up to 300 yrds at the range and scoping deer in the field. I am trying to decide on a Vortex viper HD or Leupold Ventana. Thinking 15x45-60 on both models. Anybody have any thoughts?

Whichever spotting scope you get consider one with a 45 degree eye piece, that may be helpful while spotting.

+1 on the angled eyepiece.
I'd look for a used Kowa.

Go with the straight eye piece, an angled one is more difficult to find your target. Angled eye pieces are more for prone shooting so you don't have to get out of position.
I've compared the 2, Vortex is definately the better one.

I just picked up a Leupold Kenai. I was looking at that or a Vortex Razor HD. I can spot my 22-250 bullet holes out to 400yrds. I put the Kenai and the Razor HD side by side and was looking out to 600yrds. To my suprise I could get the Kenai to focus better. Money wasn't an issue as I could have got a great deal on either of them. At 80x the Razor HD seemed to bring it in closer but could not get it to focus. The Kenai is HD also.

If money is not an object, I would buy a 12-42x56 NXS Nightforce and mount it on a tripod. Buy the MOA/MOA or MIL/MIL reticle to go with the scope(s) you are using.
