Hey guys,

Just picked up a savage model 12FV in a .204, got it for a great price because the barrel is burned out. I need to find a good replacement but I'm having trouble finding the right size for not only a custom piece but even the factory size barrel. I know its a heavy barrel with a 1.00" diameter but I'm not sure what the diameter of the barrel to receiver connection is. I've seen anywhere from 1" all the way to 1.250, anyone know specifics for this gun?

Also, any recommendations for a custom barrel??

Thanks!

The 12FV is a standard, or "small" shank receiver; any barrel manufacturer that makes Savage prefit barrels (Adams & Bennett & ER Shaw, Shilen, McGowen, Criterion, Pac-Nor, etc) makes standard/small shank barrels.

In other news, a burned out 204 barrel? That's what, 4000-5000 rounds?!?

Check out Northland Shooters Supply in the vendors classifieds. Jim will fix you right up.

Ummm...not all 12 FV rifles are small shank. There is a 223 in my safe that is a large shank.

SEARCH this site....info is there.

Or....look for a step just past the edge of the barrel nut. No step in the barrel, then small shank. Step = large shank.

I was basing my statement on this:

I knew the LRPV was large shank, but didn't think the satin finish 12FV came in WSM, RUM, or SAUM chamberings.

I obviously stand corrected...

BoilerUP,
Believe Savages are the small block chevy of the firearm world. There just might be a little bit of everything out there. :)

With Savage anything is possible so I won't rule out a large Shank, but I'd be willing to bet that 99% of actual factory trimmed 12FV rifles are small/standard shank.

I had the same question and just called Savage. My action is a target action and so it has a large shank. Also the serial number on mine starts with a G. You can call Savage customer service and give them your serial number. They'll confirm it for you.

That is probably a pretty safe guess. There isn't a lot of data out there on the .204 barrel life. Lots of folks still reporting great accuracy with 3,000+ down the tube. It all depends on how hot the loads were for the rifle. 4,000 - 5,000 rounds is an easy number to hit when you live in prairie dog country. ;)
