I had a similar question for a 223 stevens, thanks to some help a suggestion of a 358 Winchester sounds pretty perfect, only need a 308 bolt head and magazne to switch over, also could run with the 338 edge being another 308 based cartridge. Cheap brass, easy to neck up too for either, the 358 sounds more versatile as well.

Well, If you switch to the magnum bolt head, you can shoot the WSM and SAUM cartridges easliy. I have heard to the 458 Lott round being fired. That would be more than I ever want to try. Hope this helped.

I think you meant the 338 Federal being based on the .308 Win. Case. The edge is a completely different animal...based on the 300 RUM case.
The RUM case would require a magnum bolt face.

What do you mean? Largest diameter bullet? Highest pressure? Most foot pounds of energy?

Are you willing to go wildcat? Do case forming etc.?
