I pulled the buttstock on my 24 V to lighten the trigger pull and fix the light firing pin strikes.
After two rounds each of 20 gauge and 30/30, I discovered this:

It is split on both sides.
What did I do wrong?

PS I also posted on Savage24.com.

Nobody else has ever seen this?
I guess I have to conclude that I didn't tighten the stock bolt enough and the action shifted during recoil and split the stock.
Any other ideas?

I have not had that personally, but I see a lot of 24's in the used gun racks with similar splits. It just seems to be "the nature of the beast" when it comes to the 24's stock design. I have 2 of the 24's and neither one of mine have cracked, but my 222/20ga has only 40 shots through it, and the 22lr/20ga has mostly seen the 22 barrel used.

In your case I would say you are right and possibly needed it to be a little tighter. I know on some of my other guns with similar styled stocks, that once I fired a couple of shots I would need to tighten the stock a bit more.

glue it and wrap it with rubber something or other for tension untill it dries. I happen to use a length of surgical tubing
