My son just got older model 342 in 22 hornet. Dont know the year. What I am wondering is when did they change from the .223 bore to the ,224. I dont want him shooting .224 in it until we can figure out what the dia is. The serial # is behind the scope mount so we have to remove it to get it. Also is there any other way to measure to tell. I know that 1000th of an inch difference is hard to measure.

It is .224 (especially if it has a serial number). Most of the .223 hornets were those made on converted 22 rimfire guns or VERY early examples.

Thanks for the reply. I know in looking for bullets for reloading that some were listed as 22 Hornet and they were ,223. Thanks for the info. Better to ask and find out than shoot and be sorry.

Since serial numbers weren't required before the gun control act of 1968, chances are your Hornet is a later .224 version.
I had a Savage 219L which I gave to my grandson. I bought that new in 1965...it has no serial number.
