I was just putting the stock back on my rifle, after doing some work to it, and accidently torqued the action screws to 65 inch pounds rather than 45 inch pounds. I retorqued them to the proper spec right after I found out what had happened and would like to know if any damage could result from the excessing torque.

If your stock has aluminum pillars, that shouldn't have done anything. On a wood stock w/o pillars, over tightening will compress the wood fibers.

Accustock you should have the aluminum bedding block. If so there is no damage.

On the majority of center fire rifles the average torque settings are as follows.

Wood stock 25 inch pounds
Plastic stock 45 inch pounds
Synthetic composite stock 65 inch pounds

My Wheeler torque wrench recommends going up in 10 lb increments.

Over torque joke

Inspector to mechanic: Did you torque those bolts?

Mechanic: Yes I tightened the bolts until the threads started to smoke and then gave them two more full turns. ::)
