friend bought a sorry browning in 223 wsm and after looking the round got me thinking about one but what kind of barrel life can be expected from one? i'm not really wanting to do one if the barel burns out in 1k rounds or so.

Quote from 7th edition Hornady Handbook of Cartridge Reloading about the 223 wssm; "We examined the throat of the rifle with a bore scope after approximately 350 rounds and erosion was significant. This cartridge is hard on barrels."
Seems like if you took one of these on a p-dog hunt you would have to take a couple spare barrels and an asbestos mitten.

You might check on the Browning barrel, i know in my Win Model 70 Stealth, it is chrome lined, for that exact reason......rsbhunter

I wonder what kind of life could be expected if you sent the barrel off and got it Nitried treated.

Boots, that would be the thing to do, depending on what the round count and conditions it has been fired under (rapid firing) is. But, if he considers a new tube, that would be the ticket! rsbhunter

I have a 243 wssm and just had it nitrided. No time to shoot it yet though. I had already fired 150 rounds down the tube prior to the treatment.
