at what point is a barrel to long and i'm not gaining anything

i've been kicking around getting a new barrel for my 308 tigershark in either 308 or 6br right now it has the factory 26" varmint fluted barrel .......my thinking is going with a 30" bbl since my fps will go up but will the extra 4' that i'm lookng at being unsupported be worth it i know i could drill some holes in the buttt part of the stock and add weight to counter the heavy front but i have to keep it down to 18.8 lbs for f t\r class.

next would be rifle twist
in 308 i shoot 168gr but have been looking at moving to 175gr.1:10 twist
not sure about 6br since its a new load for me as far as shooting distance 300yrds most of the time with 500 maybe 0nce a month in a match (100 mile north of me )

I have a 30" McGowan tube in 1:10" twist on my .308 BVSS. With my favorite load...I'm getting 2760 fps with a 185 gr. Berger VLD / Hunting bullet. I'd say the extra length works for my load...I'm right in the .30-06 ballpark but using less powder.

Can't speak directly to the 6mmBR....except it's the parent case for my 6mm Dasher. Even with fireforming rounds...it is extremely accurate and very easy to shoot i.e. low recoil.

The 308 is a bit of an underdog so a longer barrel helps.
10 twist definitely
8 twist on the 6mm BR.

BTW 6mm BR is a great round.
Great 600 yd round and the most accurate I have shot
A 30" tube helps it too at longer distances.

In 308 try some 208 gr Amax bullets over a case full of RL17 in Win brass
loaded as long as possible. With a 30" barrel you should be able to get 2750 - 2850 FPS.
Fire formed brass would be better

Do a search over at snipers hide. There are some guys running long loads like 3.15 col in long reamed barrels over there with chrono results and they are getting good FPS.

My max load in a 19" 308 sporter barrel at 2.9" COL was 48.7gr and 2500 fps in win brass.
Makes a great hunting load. Over .3 SD.

As far as the twist on a 6BR? Go 1-8 and you can shoot anything.
All of my straight pipe barrels are at 28" except one at 26" long. All are shot off a rest. Adding weight to the back end will get the balance you need. You usually balance at or real close to the recoil lug. You just have to consider match regulations for weight.
As far as barrel length, you won't know till you try it. If it's long, you can always cut it off. Can't add length if it's shorter. ;)

so true on cant add but can always cut off on the balance part your right i have to remeber to keep it under the 18.8lb rule for f t\r class shooting even if i use it in open class i want to keep down to f t\r rules so i can shoot the 308 in both as for the 6br i have leway(sp). thanks for the input i'll know more around the 18th (gunshow ) as to what way i want to go.

Pac-Nor can make 40-inch barrels.

You can thread two together and make an 80-inch barrel.

Don't know if you can get benefit from an even longer one.

If you make the barrel long enough to touch the target you should get really really tight groups.
